What happens if an atom has a ridiculous amount of electrons and?

The number of protons is critical in this process. I don't know the details, but above a certain number, the electric repulsion will overcome the nuclear attraction. That's why heavy nuclei also have many neutrons. I am under that impression that a 1000-proton nucleus would be way too short-lived for a meaningful discussion to ensue.
